Having people who know that you've made the effort will make them more understanding, and is good to have people asking you how you've got on.

You are also going to have to tell smoking friends and family that you are stopping smoking. Ask them not to smoke in front of you, not to offer you any cigarettes and not to leave their cigarettes lying around. Say to them: "Even if I am begging you, please don't give me a cigarette."
