You need to clear the house (and car) of ashtrays, lighters and cigarettes. By making it harder for yourself to slip back into smoking you will increase your chances of success.

It can be tempting to kid yourself that it is a good idea to have a packet of cigarettes in the drawer to prove that you can avoid them, or ashtrays around the place to remind yourself how horrible they looked when they were full of ash… But the fact is that these things are reminders of smoking and opportunities to smoke.


Some of the cravings you get will probably be very powerful. The difference between the few seconds it takes to get the fags out of the draw and the few minutes it would take to go and buy some could be the difference between staying off and relapse.

It can be very tempting to test yourself by going back to smoking situations but it will be hard enough to stay off - and there will be enough difficult situations - without creating extra opportunites to relapse.
