We know that GPs advising patients to stop smoking is effective, and that it significantly reduces smoking prevalence rates. However we also know that GPs often feel uncomfortable about raising smoking as an issue(especially when patients present with non-smoking related conditions) and fear it will damage the doctor-patient relationship. The intervention pad is a resource with facilitates brief, non-confrontational, effective intervention with smokers. The Tear-off cards provide patients with a useful reminder of the key messages and allow the doctor to address the issue in a non-threatening way. The pad is designed to increase the frequency and quality of smoking cessation interventions. It has been well received by GPs who see it as something useful which facilitates their work as opposed to another request to do more. |
